Although most people’s initial concept for step down and step up transformer models is the large power distribution transformers used in power stations, many electronic components internally utilize smaller versions to supply power rails at different voltages. All step up transformers have more turns on the secondary winding than on the primary winding. This allows the input AC power signal to increase based on the turns ratio while simultaneously reducing the secondary output current by the same ratio.
By increasing the voltage and reducing the output current, both resistive power loss and power lost as heat dissipation is reduced. These power loss factors can be critical in certain applications. The step down transformer works inversely to the step up transformer but follows all the same principles.
